Differences Between Therapy and Life Coaching

Therapy takes place face-to-face in the office setting, and lasts for approximately 50 minutes. It usually involves working with individuals on issues that are imbedded in the past. Resolving conflict from the past may be the only way to progress forward. Once individuals are able to move through past- related issues, the focus becomes on the present and future. Therapy is usually centered in finding ways to change thoughts, feelings, and behavior. The treatment goals can involve an increased sense of well-being, relationship building, improving communication levels, and changing behavior patterns.

Life Coaching can take place on the telephone or face to face. Sessions are held for blocks of 2 hours, 4 hours, and 8 hours. Life Coaching involves more of an equal partnership between coach and client -- a process of inquiry that empowers clients to reconnect with their own inner wisdom, to find their own answers and to rediscover powerful moments of choice where self- transformation occurs. It creates a bridge from where you are to where you want to be in your life. Coaching is intensely goal-oriented. The coach and client work together on an action plan to complete goals by removing stumbling blocks that may have in the past impeded the client from moving forward. There is email contact between sessions to further track the weekly progress of the client. Life Coaching involves structured homework assignments that are tailored to the client's goals. Coaching is not advice, therapy, or counseling, but may address specific personal issues, projects, situations and transitions within your life.

Stacie's Philosophy on Therapy and Coaching:

Stacie's philosophy is that both therapy and life coaching should be targeted, timely, and temporary. The therapy or life coaching services should be targeted for a specific challenge that an individual is hoping to overcome in life. The services are provided at the time when individuals are motivated to make life changes. It is a temporary goal, meaning the goal is not to make the individual a perpetual client. Instead, Stacie works to empower the client so that he or she can apply skills learned in therapy and life coaching into his or her everyday life experience.

Stacie's Approach

Stacie offers nurturing and nonjudgmental therapy and life coaching services in a confidential setting. She structures the treatment to accommodate her client's schedules and individual needs. When appropriate, she uses a mind-body-spirit approach. By living a more holistic life, she believes a sense of balance can be created that will reduce vulnerability to crises.

Stacie utilizes the following techniques to help facilitate the change phase in sessions with her clients:

• Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a model used to connect to the unconscious mind to eliminate negative emotions and beliefs that in the past have prevented an individual from moving forward with their goals.
• Hypnotherapy is another technique utilized to tap into the unconscious, and puts the client in a trance-like state where they are more likely to accept positive suggestions.
• Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are both used to help the client make behavioral changes from a cognitive level.
• Mindfulness Techniques help clients detach from negative thoughts and feelings. This technique allows clients to be an observer of their thoughts and feelings, recognize them for what they are, and realize that they are more than the sum of their thoughts and feelings. This skill implementation permits the client to move into a liberating mental space which brings about positive change at a rapid rate.
